The following photographs of the old McGilvray-Raymond quarry located in Lakeside were taken in late May 2012. Jeff McGreevy, a member of the San Diego Mineral and Gem Society and the Santee Historical Society, very generously took us to the McGilvray granite quarry as a part of the tour that he created for us of some of the old granite quarries located in the central portion of San Diego County.
If you would like to read more about the old McGilvray-Raymond Corp. granite quarry at Lakeside, visit the “McGilvray-Raymond Corporation” quarry section of our web site. John McGilvray, the founder of the McGilvray Stone Company, operated branch offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Besides the McGilvray granite quarry in Lakeside, the company operated the following California quarries: the McGilvray granite quarry at Knowles, Madera County; the McGilvray Stone Co. sandstone quarry located in Colusa County; and the Graystone/Stanford sandstone quarry located south of San Jose in Santa Clara County. You can read more about John McGilvray, his family, and his company in the 1921 article, “California’s Granites are Unsurpassed. John D. McGilvray, Pioneer Stone Man, Develops Great Industry Here,” (pdf) on our web site. The Lakeside granite quarry that the McGilvray Raymond Corporation operated was leased from 1922 through the 1930s from the Simpson-Pirnie Company. (Other operators of this quarry were W. A. Meyer (1922-1930) and Andrew Lehnberg, according to Geology and Mineral Resources of San Diego County, California, 1963.)
