“The sixth annual convention of the Memorial Craftsmen of Missouri was held at Moberly, Missouri on February 1st and 2nd, and notwithstanding the fact that it was held at the birthplace of the Association, and that every effort had been put forth by President Paul Stevenson and Secretary Charles A. Barker, as well as by the Moberly Chamber of Commerce, the fact remains that the attendance was not very large....”

“This was followed by a discussion which was taken part in by almost everyone present and it was generally conceded that the situation is a difficult one owing to the fact there are two rush seasons during the year, but that there is not enough work during the rest of the time to keep the men busy. Mr. Blauw suggested that members should buy polished slabs and base stock for the men to work on during the dull seasons. Mr. Barker called attention to the fact that there are many returned soldiers who are incapacitated for their original occupations and that the Government allows them a four year vocational course, paying them $135.00 per month with tools furnished by the Government. He said that he had taken on two of these and had talked with the Government representative several times ascertaining that there were a good many available men from this source. Mr. Stevenson reported a similar situation and said that he had taken one of these soldiers. The discussion led into the matter of great importance of educating the people to buy monuments twelve months in the year, and Mr. Cassidy suggested that sales campaigns should be begun the very next day after Armistice Day and Decoration Day....”
