Marble: "Besides the numerous and extensive beds of marble in California and the other Pacific States and Territories, this stone seems to occur in great abundance and of good quality in Alaska. As early as 1867 Prof. George Davidson reported finding on Baranoff island, 10 miles north of Sitka, a large deposit of marble, which he described as being a pure white, finely crystallized stone, free from marks and stains, rendering it very desirable. Believing this to be a valuable deposit a company has been formed in San Francisco to work it on an extensive scale."
