Notes From Quarry and Shop: “Kansas City, Mo. - While handling a block of stone in the yards of the Phœnix Cut Stone Company, March 8 last, the tackle broke, and James Louttit was caught beneath the falling mass and sustained severe injuries. He has filed a suit against the company for $10,000 damages, claiming in his petition that he was crippled for life, and that the negligence of the company was responsible for it.”

August and September have compelled over-time in all departments, that is – quarry, mill, tile and cut stone. Their mill has been operating twenty-four hours a day since March. New York City and territory, through the agency of the Tompkins-Kiel Marble Company, has consumed a very large portion of their output.”

“John A. Brown, superintendent of the cut stone department of the Phenix Marble Company, Kansas City, Mo., died in Kansas City on April 19. Mr. Brown was born in Scotland and came to this country in 1884 and shortly thereafter became connected with the Hughes & Dugan Stone Company of Kansas City. Later he entered into the carving and contracting business on his own account and in 1905 became identified with the Phenix Marble Company in charge of its cut stone department, a position he held up to the time of his death. Napoleon Gray: A Marble That Is Seemingly Without Limitation
Is there a wide gap between the rare beauty of the columned halls of the California Palace of The Legion of Honor and the severe business-like walls of the Greeyly Arcade Building, New York City? Obvious as the answer is, still isn’t it strange that both Mr. Applegarth in the West and George and Edward Blum in the East, found in Napoleon gray Marble for ideal material for their different problems.

A Marble Dance Floor
So far as we know, this is the only outside marble dance floor in the country.
In 1920 The Edgewater Beach Hotel, on Lake Michigan, Chicago, decided to build an uncovered dance floor directly on the beach, a few feet from the water.
As it would be subject to summer suns as well as winter snows, it necessarily had to be of some material not affected by the elements. Napoleon Gray Marble in tiles 8 inches by 16 inches was the choice. The floor has stood up so well that lately another section has been added.

“One of the progressive western stone companies that is rapidly forging to the front is the Phenix Stone and Lime Company of Kansas City. This company produces a high grade limestone suitable for all structural purposes. The illustration given herewith showing a corner of the quarry, shows better than can be told in words the nature of the deposit. It will be seen that the stone is unusually hard, that it lies in level beds of great thickness, that there is very little overburden and almost no waste rock, and that blocks can be gotten out of any size up to the capacity of the derricks to handle. The equipment is modern and well arranged, and the quarry has been admirably developed. Another illustration shows the mill of the company. This is very completely equipped with all of the latest stone working appliances. In the yard there is a traveling crane of wide span and large capacity. It will thus be seen that that both from the quarrying and the cutting end the Phenix Stone and Lime Company is capable of handling a construction contract of any magnitude.
