During the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s, people ordered cemetery stones through mail order catalogs such as the Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Wards tombstone catalogs or from stone companies such as the Vermont Marble Company or the Georgia Marble Company. They monument companies and traveling agents used price lists such as the two examples below to provide their customers with choices of various types and grades of marble. Many times the customer would choose a more expensive stone for the main body (aka the die) of the monument and choose a lower grade of stone or granite for the base(s). (Please note: You can view the 1889 Vermont Company Price list below.)
Sometimes the local carver would order “blank” stones from these mail order companies and keep them on stock for their customers to choose from. If the customer chose a design from one of the catalogs, the names and dates may be carved at the manufacturer of the stone or the local stone carver could carve on the names, dates, and epitaphs once they receive the stone from the mail order company or they could try to copy the stone.
