


The Vermont Marble Company published many books during the late 1800s through the early 1900s that presented various styles of cemetery monuments that were a part of a lettered series and some according to a theme, such as the book from which the images below from "The Child" were taken. They were given the choice of various types and grades of marble. Many times the customer would choose a more expensive stone for the main body (or die) of the monument and choose a lower grade of stone or granite for the base(s).
Sometimes the local carver would order “blank” stones from these mail order companies and keep them on stock for their customers to choose from.
